Peer Mentoring Program
Applications will be accepted in early Winter quarter 2010.
What is Peer Mentoring?
The University Honors Program provides first
year Honors students with a Peer Mentor. Peer Mentors are second or third year
Honors students who are teamed with freshmen by major. Peer Mentors serve as a
role model, answer questions, and help ease the transition from high school to
college. Peer Mentors have experienced what it is like to be a UCR and Honors
student and can give insight into what it was like for them.
First year students can benefit from the
experience of these successful students and can feel comfortable discussing
issues that many new students face. Each mentor is paired with between six and
ten first year students.
Peer Mentors also serve as leaders within the
Honors Program. Peer Mentors receive extensive training, including a 10-week
course in spring quarter, one-week summer and fall trainings, and attend weekly
staff meetings throughout the year. Peer Mentors also serve as Teaching
Assistants for the first year course, HNPG 009, and facilitate weekly discussion
sections.
Peer Mentors also
participate in recruitment events for the Honors Program and UC Riverside, as
well as serving on one of five Honors Committees: Executive Committee, Community
Service Committee, Newsletter Committee, Muffin Morning Committee, and Social
Committee.
In addition, Peer Mentors
are involved in leadership positions on and off-campus, including the Learning
Center, Counseling Center, Student Cultural Programs, LGBT Resource Center,
CHASS Student Academic Affairs, Medical Scholars Program, REACH Peer Educators,
Residential Life, and many others.
PM/RA/PC Policy:
Students who serve as Peer Mentors for the first time may not also hold the
leadership position of Resident Advisor also for the first time. This means that
a student cannot be both a first-time Peer Mentor and a first-time RA at the
same time.
The Honors Program supports and encourages students to get involved in
leadership positions on campus, however, our first priority is students'
academic success and personal well-being, as well as the success and consistency
of the mentoring program.
Students may, however, serve as a Programming Coordinator (PC) in addition to
being a Peer Mentor, since the time and job task requirements of PCs are
different than RAs.
