Welcome | Information & Registration | Getting Ready | FAQs | Honors Bear Facts Orientation | Summer Assignment

Welcome to the UC Riverside University Honors Program!

Congratulations on your admission to UC Riverside and the University Honors Program (UHP). You are at a major milestone of life. Now is a time for self-exploration, learning what is important to you, and charting a course for broadening your intellectual and personal horizons.

Your first introduction to University life will be through the Summer University Honors Program (SUHP) experience. SUHP is MANDATORY for all newly admitted Honors students. This is a time for you to become familiar with the various Honors components. There will be assignments, so come prepared to work hard. We also have several fun events and activities planned. In addition, July 1-2 is the Honors Bear Facts Orientation.  It is strongly recommended that you sign up for the Honors Bear Facts Orientation.  Attending SUHP/Honors Bear Facts is your opportunity for priority registration. Be among the first incoming first year students to register for fall classes.

SUHP will be held Monday, June 29 - Tuesday, June 30, 2009. More specific information as well as a schedule of events is included below. The cost of the program is $175.00.

SUHP has passed - please review the summer assignment information!

To Do List for Newly Admitted Incoming First Year Honors Students:

The following is a list of To-Do items you should complete in preparation for the Summer University Honors Program (SUHP):

  • Carefully read and review information regarding SUHP and Honors Bear Facts Orientation on this website

  • Register for SUHP by Friday, June 12, 2009.

  • Register for Bear Facts Orientation, July 1-2: Online Registration Form: http://orientation.ucr.edu/register.html   PLEASE NOTE: Bear Facts Orientation is a separate program from SUHP and has its own registration and fee.

Summer University Honors Program (SUHP):
Monday, June 29 - Tuesday, June 30

SUHP is MANDATORY for all newly admitted Honors students. This two-day program is an opportunity for you to become familiar with the various Honors components and expectations, as well as to meet Honors faculty, staff, and students.

SUHP includes a lecture and discussion of the summer reading, as well as an introduction to the peer mentor program, and opportunities to interact with Honors faculty. There will also be a number of community building events and activities designed to help you get to know other incoming first year Honors students.

SUHP is scheduled directly before the Honors Bear Facts Orientation session (July 1-2), so that Honors students only need to come to campus once for both programs. If you attend the Honors Bear Facts Orientation July 1-2, you do NOT need to attend another college-specific Bear Facts session later in July. Students will attend SUHP and then automatically transition into Bear Facts Orientation. You will be housed on campus the entire time.

Fees and Payment

The SUHP registration fee is $175, which includes a $75.00 nonrefundable deposit. This covers the cost of housing, meals, and all materials for SUHP. Students will automatically be billed $175, and the fee will be added to your student account. IMPORTANT: If you register for SUHP but cannot attend, you must contact the Honors Program by June 12, 2009 to cancel. Otherwise, you will be charged the full $175 fee for SUHP. Students may access their statement of account online beginning in October.

Please note that while SUHP and Honors Bear Facts Orientation occur together, each program has a separate fee and method of payment.  You must register separately for each program.  Please use the links provided. Please see further below for more information about Honors Bear Facts Orientation.

SUHP Housing

During SUHP, you will be housed on campus the entire time. Living on campus is required, and we do not allow students to commute to the summer program. The residential component is an important aspect of the SUHP experience. The SUHP fee includes housing overnight from Monday, June 29 to Wednesday, July 1. On the morning of July 1, Honors students will transition directly into Honors Bear Facts Orientation. Students will then be housed for Bear Facts Orientation through Thursday, July 2.

SUHP Schedule

SUHP schedule is packed with numerous academic and social activities designed to orient to the Honors Program. With just two short days, we have attempted to include as much information and fun as possible. As a result, you should expect to have sessions beginning in the morning and continuing into the evening.

Check-In: Monday, June 29, 9:00AM - 11:00AM in Lothian Residence Hall

Students can check in anytime from 9am-11am on Monday, June 29.  Please plan to arrive by 10:30am at latest.  Check in will be in Lothian Residence Hall. Families must plan to eat lunch on their own. At 11am, students will go to lunch.

Daily SUHP Activities: Monday-Tuesday, June 29-30

Students will attend an academic lecture and discussion, and other various workshops and sessions. In addition, students will have an opportunity to participate in some of the most popular SUHP events: hall Olympics, the talent show, and the farewell dance. SUHP will officially end with check out on Wednesday, July 1 at 8am.

Talent Show: Tuesday, June 30

The SUHP talent show is an annual tradition to showcase the various talents of our students. We invite you to participate (singing, playing music, poetry, dance, skits, etc.)! You may wish to bring an instrument or materials to participate. In previous years, students have brought guitars, ballet shoes, batons, self-written poetry, and CD's of music. Other students have collaborated with fellow students after they met at SUHP to put together a performance.  Prizes will be awarded to winners!

Honors Bear Facts Orientation: Wednesday-Thursday, July 1-2

Students will transition from SUHP to Honors Bear Facts Orientation on Wednesday morning, July 1. Students will move from Lothian residence hall to Pentland Hills residence hall, the location of Bear Facts Orientation. This transition is coordinated by staff.

Check-Out: Thursday, July 2, 5:30pm in Pentland Hills Residence Hall

Students will check out from Bear Facts Orientation at 5:30pm at Pentland Hills residence hall. Students who are not staying for Honors Bear Facts Orientation, may check out at 8am on Wednesday, July 1 at Lothian residence hall.
