Upper Division HonorsTransfer Student Profiles
Jennifer Simmers
Jennifer Simmers, a current graduate student in the Sociology Department pursuing a PhD in the area of specialization of race, class and inequality. Jennifer recently completed her undergraduate degree and honors thesis regarding the increasing social acceptance of the use of institutionalized force against Chicano minors and the growth of the Chicano population. What is one piece of advice you’d give other students? Some sort of involvement is very important, especially if going on to graduate school. Even if you don’t do Upper Division Honors at least volunteer your time with a professor and their work. Having professors know you makes a big difference. Was it hard to do your thesis? It wasn’t easy, but I did it! It was made easier because I was interested in what I wanted to do! What was the deciding factor in committing to the program?I attended an informational meeting and received an email which triggered me to think about doing research, why not? I am at a research institution. Since I had the GPA after one quarter I knew I could maintain it. How has the program assisted you with your future? The most beneficial item has been that I feel more confident within the cohort community because I have the experience of writing something and working independently before starting graduate work. The fellow cohort members cover a wide scope of students and my comfort level amongst them is high as I have something to bring to the table.
