Paige StevensMany of the highlights of my time at UCR revolved around Honors. SUHP was by far one of my favorite Honors events because it served as a fantastic way to make new friends and learn more about the campus. Honors was also able to help my sister and I start a volunteer project called Josh and Friends that focuses on helping kids at the Loma Linda University Children's Hospital cope with their hospitalizations. Without the support of the Honors staff, this project never would have been able to grow and accomplish all of the things that it did over the years. My two years working as a Honors Peer Mentor were also highlights of my Honors experience. Peer Mentoring gave me the opportunity to share my experiences with new honors students and take on a more active role in planning the community service events that Honors hosted each quarter. Some of the skills that I learned while in Honors such as time management, organization, event planning, and leadership continue to serve me well in medical school. I have no doubt that UCR Honors played an integral role in preparing me for medical school and for my future as a physician and I couldn't be more thankful for the opportunities that Honors gave me to learn and grow during my time at UCR.

One of the most important lessons that UCR Honors taught me during my time as an undergraduate was to always look for opportunities to serve and give back to my community. This philosophy of service has become a very integral part of my life and I can now look back and say that all of the accomplishments that I am most proud of revolve around ways that I was able to give back to my community. Since graduating from UCR, I have completed my first year of medical school. Although the stereotype is that medical students do all of their volunteer work just to boost their resumes in order to get into medical school, I have striven to break that type-cast. Because Honors placed such a heavy emphasis on service during my busy pre-med undergrad years, I was already accustomed to incorporating service hours into my schedule. This year, despite the hectic schedule of my first year of medical school, I was still able to make time to tutor every week, volunteer with programs for local San Bernadino kids on the weekends, and continue to do work with Josh and Friends, a volunteer program that I helped to create during my time at UCR. As educated members of our society, we are all called to share the blessings that we have been given with those around us. I am grateful that Honors continues to make community service a priority in its curriculum because I know that UCR Honors Alumni will continue to make waves of impact in this world as a result of the passion for service that Honors instills in its students.
