Connor RichardsUndergraduate Named Finalist for Marshall Scholarship
"Fourth-year physics undergraduate Connor Richards recently became the first UCR student in more than a decade to be named a finalist for the Marshall Scholarship, one of the most prestigious academic honors in the nation. Since coming to UCR, Richards has won both the Strauss and Goldwater scholarships, and has spearheaded a project to mentor and encourage high school students interested in pursuing STEM careers. He is active in the UCR Honors program."

Strauss Scholars
Undergraduates Win Strauss Scholarships for STEM-related Projects
Undergraduates at the University of California, Riverside are on a success roll. First, two students won Goldwater Scholarships, announced last month. Now three undergraduate students have been named winners of prestigious scholarships from the Donald A. Strauss Foundation. Highly competitive, the Strauss Scholarship is a public service scholarship given to university students in California.

Goldwater Scholarship, one of the most prestigious and competitive undergraduate awards given in the sciences.

Three undergraduates at the University of California, Riverside – one who hated science in high school, another who spoke no English five years ago, and a third who immigrated to the United States not too long ago from Taiwan – have won prestigious fellowships from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI), enabling them to do cutting-edge research this summer for ten weeks in top laboratories in the country.

Physics and Astronomy undergraduate Connor Richards got to work at CERN, Switzerland, over the summer on two projects: upgrade work for the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment’s Hadronic Calorimeter (HCAL) and a physics analysis to get ready for the second run of the Large Hadron Collider.

Cardullo Named Howard H Hays Chair and Director of University Honors
Richard Cardullo, professor of biology and a distinguished teaching professor at UCR  was named the Howard H. Hays Chair and director of University Honors on August 4.
The chair endowment will provide funding in support of research in conjunction with University Honors and in accordance with University policy.
Cardullo’s research has focused on the molecular, cellular, and physical determinants of fertilization in a variety of animal systems.

Chancellor’s Research Fellowships Announced for 2014­–15
Thirteen undergraduate students from the University of California, Riverside will receive $5,000 stipends that can be used to cover research- or creative-activity related expenses during the 2014-15 academic year as part of the Chancellor’s Research Fellowship (CRF) program. The recipients of the third-annual fellowships were announced on Friday, June 6, 2014 in HUB 355 as part of a celebration of undergraduate research hosted by the Office of Undergraduate Research that also featured the unveiling of the eighth annual UCR Undergraduate Research Journal

UC Riverside’s Connor Richards has won a prestigious Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship
Richards is a second-year undergraduate student in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of California, Riverside, and has just won a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship, considered by many to be the most prestigious undergraduate award given in the sciences, with only about 300 students nationwide earning one each year.

Mary Nguyen Receives the 2013 Goldwater Scholarship
Mary Nguyen, a junior in chemistry and a University Honors student, has been selected as the 2013 Goldwater Scholarship Recipient. The scholarship provides $7,500 for juniors to encourage them to pursue careers in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering and to foster excellence in these fields.

A Newspaper Man Plans Ahead
Howard H “Tim” Hays, former owner and publisher of The Press-Enterprise newspaper, set up a charitable trust more than 20 years ago that will now benefit the University Honors program. Tim Hays served as a founding member of the UCR Board of Trustees; he supported the creation and collections of the UCR/California Museum of Photography; he established an endowed scholarship fund in honor of his father; and now has delivered on the endowed fund to support the UCR Honors program.
